Emeritus Maintainers
An emeritus status helps projects recognize past maintainer contributions while keeping active ownership lists accurate.
What Emeritus Means
An emeritus maintainer is someone who previously held maintainer responsibilities and stepped back from active duties.
Emeritus maintainers:
- Are publicly recognized for prior leadership and contribution.
- Are not expected to perform active maintainer duties.
- Do not block day-to-day project governance or release operations.
When to Move a Maintainer to Emeritus
Common triggers:
- The maintainer requests to step back.
- Sustained inactivity over a documented period.
- Role change where active responsibilities are no longer feasible.
Projects should define the inactivity window in governance documents.
Suggested Process
- Open a transparent discussion in the project communication channel.
- Confirm status change with the maintainer when possible.
- Record the decision in project governance and maintainer-list docs.
- Update CNCF maintainer records when required.
- Announce the transition and thank the maintainer publicly.
Recognition and Continuity
Recommended practices:
- Maintain an Emeritus section in governance docs.
- Keep a short record of key contributions.
- Invite emeritus maintainers for historical context when useful.
Reinstatement
If an emeritus maintainer returns to active participation, use the same process defined for appointing active maintainers and document the transition.

"Maintainers who step back from active responsibilities may be listed as Emeritus Maintainers. Emeritus Maintainers are recognized for prior service, are not expected to perform routine maintainer duties, and may return to active status through the documented maintainer appointment process."
