Environmental Sustainability Technical Community Group

The Environmental Sustainability Technical Community Group (TCG) advocates for, develops, supports, and evaluates environmental sustainability initiatives in cloud native technologies and practices.

Mission​

The Environmental Sustainability TCG serves as a community rallying point for discussing, sharing knowledge, and coordinating initiatives that help reduce the energy consumption and carbon footprint of cloud native technologies and practices. The group brings together practitioners, vendors, and end users focused on making environmental sustainability a first-class concern across the cloud native landscape.

Focus Areas​

Measurement and Tooling​

  • Energy and Carbon Metrics: Quantifying the energy consumption and carbon footprint of cloud native workloads
  • Measurement Tooling: Supporting projects such as Kepler for power and energy measurement
  • Landscape Gaps: Identifying gaps in environmental sustainability coverage across the CNCF landscape
  • Green Reviews: Supporting TAG Operational Resilience initiatives such as the Green Reviews subproject

Best Practices and Guidance​

  • Optimization Guidance: Recommendations for reducing energy, carbon, and resource consumption in cloud native deployments
  • Education: Resources for end users, developers, and stakeholders on sustainable cloud native practices

Community and Advocacy​

  • Sustainability Advocacy: Outreach and awareness efforts across the community through blog posts, podcast interviews, talks, and organizing events
  • Cloud Native Sustainability Month: Organizing the annual global series of community-led events that highlight environmental sustainability work, held annually since 2023
  • External Collaboration: Engagement with environmental and sustainability organizations outside CNCF, including the Green Software Foundation

  • Long Term: Potentially evolve into a TAG or subproject if sustained value and formal oversight is needed
